How Often Does My Car Need an Oil Change?

For as long as you’ve owned a vehicle, you’ve probably heard that your car should have its oil changed every 3,000 miles. While this is certainly true for some vehicles, it is not necessarily true for all. In fact, more and more of today’s vehicles can go much longer without getting an oil change. So, how do you know how often this simple service needs to be done?

There are a few factors that determine the frequency of your car’s oil changes, including vehicle model age, the types of driving you do and the type of oil your car requires. Here is a brief guide to help you determine how often you should take your vehicle in for an oil change.

General oil change frequencies

There is no one hard and fast rule for oil change frequency in automobiles. Typically, newer cars can usually go between 5,000 and 7,500 miles before changing the oil. Cars with high-tech engines that run on full-synthetic oil, like BMWs, claim you can drive up to 15,000 miles before getting an oil change. However, all of these mileage ranges can vary based on the age, make and model of your German vehicle.

The best way to find out what’s best for your model is to read the owner’s manual. When you go in for German car maintenance in Albuquerque, NM, the auto experts can also tell you how often to have the oil changed. Some cars also have an oil life monitor on the dashboard to help you know when it’s time to change your oil.

At a minimum, German car experts suggest you have your vehicle’s oil changed at least once a year, even if your car hasn’t reached the maximum number of miles yet.

How you drive can affect oil life

The types of driving you do can have a large impact on the frequency of your oil changes, as well. Drivers who do mainly highway driving for longer periods of time will typically be able to get more mileage in before having to get an oil change.

Oil needs to be changed more often if you drive in more severe conditions, such as in lots of stop-and-go traffic, in extreme hot or cold temperatures or short distances when the engine doesn’t reach full operating temperature. All of these conditions can shorten the life of your motor oil. Thus, even if your vehicle manual claims you can go 15,000 miles before changing the oil, if you drive in extreme conditions often, you should have the oil changed more frequently.

If you do a mix of driving and are unsure if your oil needs to be changed, pop the hood and take a few seconds to examine the oil dipstick yourself. If it’s lower than normal or appears dirty, it’s probably time to have it changed.
